To receive the Feed in Tariff you will need to have your system registered and certified by a authorised MCS installer register with a licensed `Feed-in Tariff (FiT’s) supplier.

The government are currently consulting on changes to the current Feed-in Tariff rates for Solar PV. The proposal is to cut the current rates paid to generators from 43.3p to 21p for installations below 4kW.

The current rates are only guaranteed until 12 December 2011, anyone applying for Feed-in Tariffs after this date will only receive the current rate until 31 March 2012, they will then be moved to the new rate as of 1 April 2012.

Q.Can you clarify the statement that the feed in tariff is calculated on the size of the system not how much it produces.

A. To start with this is bit of a misleading statement, however as an example a 4kW system may have an estimated yield of 3787kW pa, this is the capacity or the size of the system. When the system is commissioned the kW figure on the MCS cert will used to determine the `Generation tariff' the price per unit that you are paid*. In this example it is below 4kW and will be paid at the highest rate currently 41.3p

The method for determining how many units to pay you at that rate varies for different suppliers as the whole country is changing over to 'Smart Meters' in the next few years, and they will be able to cope better then. 

 

In the meantime meters are required to measure two of the three energy flows (Generation & Import).  Export is explained below.

The requirement for providing these readings will vary for different suppliers. Once Smart Meters are introduced the meters can be read remotely and some companies already offer this service now http://utilitycostreductions.co.uk/first.aspx.  

Otherwise your supply company may arrange for the meter reading or they may ask energy users to provide the readings.

 

You already have an `Import meter' because that's the one your electricity bills are based on. Some of these can also measure the exports back to the grid such as supplied by First Utility http://utilitycostreductions.co.uk/first.aspx

 

A `Generation meter' is fitted as part of any eligible renewable system you install. Some Feed - in- Tariff suppliers may ask you to take readings from the generation meter others will deem the amount biased on the total capacity*. 

 

To prevent the need for installing an additional `Export meter' before Smart Meters are introduced, it will be possible to 'deem' the level of exports as 50% of the total generation of the system.
